At Holy Family we are committed to the delivery of excellent phonics and aim to develop children's skills with fluency and a love of reading.
In 2021 the Government introduced a specific criteria of which to teach phonics. They 'approved' 45 SSP programmes which they saw to meet this criteria. There is no statutory requirement for schools to choose one of the SSP programmes on the validated list as long as schools take an approach that is rigorous, systematic and used with fidelity (any resources used should exactly match the Grapheme Phoneme Correspondence (GPC) progression of their chosen SSP approach), and that achieves strong results for all pupils, including the most disadvantaged.
As our results were high already at Holy Family, we decided to take a blended approach. We use the structure of monster phonics in the sound pattern it suggests, as well as the supporting books along side (to ensure GPC correspondence). We supplement this with our own plans designed in house. We then looked at all our existing books and one by one re-levelled them to meet the new progression.
