Holy Family Catholic Primary School

Love one another as I have loved you.

Welcome to the Science section of the school website!

At Holy Family, we believe that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

Our Statement of Intent:

At Holy Family we encourage children to be inquisitive throughout their time at this school and beyond. The science curriculum fosters a healthy curiosity in children about our universe and promotes respect for the living and non-living. We believe science encompasses the acquisition of knowledge, concepts, skills and positive attitudes. Throughout the programmes of study, the children will acquire and develop the key knowledge that has been identified within each unit and across each year group, as well as the application of scientific skills. We ensure that the 'Working Scientifically' skills are built-on and developed throughout the children's time at school so that they can apply their knowledge of science when using equipment, conducting experiments, building arguments and explaining concepts confidently and continue to ask question and be curious about their surroundings.

Many thanks,

Holy Family Primary School subject overview.

Year 5 Science day at St. Bede's High School

Year 5 enjoyed a fun filled taster day at St. Bede's Catholic High School. They experienced a murder mystery event where they had to solve problems using scientific  techniques. They also spent time in the design technology department. Year 5 successfully designed a popcorn box.

School Science day with Adrian Bowden 17th October 2022

Adrian visited the school again this year and the children in both Key Stages have had a wonderful time.

KS1 were focusing on working Scientifically and KS2 were looking at materials and how they are reversible or not.

Adrian came into school to inspire the children about Science and have a love of learning and it is fair to say that this was exactly the case!

KS2 enjoying a variety of experiments.

KS1 enjoying learning how to work scientifically.

Year 6 are studying 'Seeing Light' as part of their Science. Today we learnt how the sun, when blocked, creates shadows. We had fun creating shadow puppets.
